A visual artist, Marepe began his studies in Visual Arts at Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), in Salvador, in 1988. In the 1990s, he started to use everyday objects in his installations, such as beer cans, bundles of clothing, cigarette boxes, or cardboard. He recreates popular scenes from Northeast Brazil, such as street vending.
In several of Marepe’s works, his proposal includes audience participation. In his works, the artist seeks to address matters that are related to collective memory, by exploring their poetic meaning.
